Introduction to Harmony

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:53 pm

Greetings readers!

Anytime the Harmony Quartet has a date, we consider it an honor and a gift to share the gospel in song. God has called us for this purpose. He has equipped us for a journey that will, undoubtedly, take us to many a memorable place. Places that we’ve never seen. Places we’ve been MANY times. - All with a story to tell. It is my desire to share these stories with you.

I won’t presume that you know who we are, and will take a brief moment to introduce us.

That said: The Harmony Quartet is working through it’s 18th year this year! Our style is traditional male quartet music. We use both tracks, but really shine when it’s just 4 voices and the piano player. (Of whom I am partial seeing that it is ME)
Our baritone singer - Dan Andrews born in the heart of gospel music in Nashville TN about 200 years ago! Not really, although someone recently asked Dan his age and he said “I’m pushing 60″ - to which one of our fans affectionetely responded “Looks to me like you’re DRAGGING it!” - All joking aside, Dan is a founding member and the faithful rock that holds the group together!
Our lead singer needs no introduction……………………………..
Okay, fine! - Keith Gilliam who started singing in the roaring 80’s with a group called The Calvary Boys, worked his way up to full-time status with the Toney Brothers. Having graced the stage of the National Quartet Convention, Keith is also an accomplished songwriter and musician. (I don’t like musicians….they make me work too hard!)
He also serves as the groups emcee and you never know WHAT you’re gonna get!
With any ministry comes…….law enforcement? I don’t know what that means, but our tenor singer Bryan Rayburn  is a Sergeant Deputy Sheriff and has got power to burn. Don’t be surprised if, during one of his solo verses, that he holds a very high note long enough for you to go back to our record table and purchase several of our cds!
If J.D. Sumner and Geroge Younce adopted a child (not that they would because of the legal issues, and the fact they’re both passed on) - BUT, I’m pretty sure that our bass singer Duane Daniel would be a product of their raising just based on his vocal ability and temperment (he gets impatient when I don’t roll the cords correctly when we are tearing down equipment). Duane is also a Firefighter/Paramedic, and with the bus we used to have, that came in handy!
That brings us to the piano player. Mr. David Smith, a product of Assembly of God/Baptist raising (which is probably why my rythym is off just a bit!) - I clap on 1,2 and 4!
At the age of 12 I took piano lessons from a lady who said that I would be playing out of the hymnal in 9 months.  Although I beat the nine month goal….I didn’t play “exactly” as it is written. Reading enough to stay out of trouble, I tend to “improvise” quite a bit.  Formed several church quartets, ’til I joined Harmony in August of ‘02.
With a passion for the “golden era” of quartets style of music, the determination to always fill the date, and an attitude of “the audience deserves to hear this music, and to hear it well” - This makes up the Harmony Quartet. - This makes my first post.
I invite you to continue to read as I share my random thoughts, and quartet adventures. Trust me, you’ll enjoy my mishaps. - I’m a bottle of awkward waiting to be spilled!
It’s sure to be a pleasant ride!! (Your comments are always welcome)

Later,

David

  1. Heard you in Keene on June 20, 2009 and really enjoyed it. Was wondering how Brian is doing and hope he is back in good health. Keep up the good work.
